Alpha 65 studio monitor — Focal

One of the best 6-inch studio monitors under 1000 euros. 6 years of enjoyable work with my pair. Yesterday I bought next level of monitoring for my home studio…Shape Twin.

These speakers have done me well! Would highly recommend to anybody looking to up there quality and get industry sound for cheap!

Nice sounding monitor accept one has a buzz with certain low frequencies. I’ve read others reported the same anomaly, but nobody has mentioned a fix. Sounds like it maybe an air leak around the woofer or like a lifted speaker surround that flaps. It’s only 4 screws mounting them to the cabinet. The EVO Alpha 65 has 5 or 6 I think. Afraid to take apart and reseat with a better seal for fear of voiding warranty. Just registered for warranty, so I’m going to find out. Didn’t want to return because over all they translate mixes as well as my krk V8’s Version 2’s, but not as harsh. Going to use the KRK’s for cross reference and move the sweet spot back after setting them a little wider apart.

Hope I can get a warranty fix as these were close out speakers from after the release of the Alpha 65 EVO’s.

These speakers are really great sounding. My review isn’t 5 stars because firstly they do hiss and buzz even when nothing is plugged into them however I only really notice it when I’m doing quieter tasks.

Another feature which I do find annoying but I can live with is the auto standby feature. It’s useful when you want it but it can be annoying when you don’t. Also you need to remember it exists — there are a couple times when I forget and check that my output settings are correct etc. The speakers seem well built for the price and have some great functionality. However I wish they had a proper volume control and maybe the on/off switch on the front. Also I wish the high and low shelf controls were stepped so I could ensure both speakers are set to the same settings.

Overall, apart from the minor drawbacks which are mentioned above, these speakers are amazing for the price. The low end is extremely good especially for a 6.5″ cabinet and the highs are clear and sound great.

Amazing speakers

These studio monitors were exactly what I needed for my studio upgrade! My studio is now upgraded to 7.1 surround with all-Focal Alpha series monitors: (3) Alpha 80 for LCR, and (4) Alpha 65 for side and rear surrounds.

Unlike some other competitors in the similar price range, it is obvious that Focal did allow some of their higher-end technology to “trickle down” into these budget-tier studio monitors. They sound much better, and are significantly better quality than others in the same price bracket!

My one complaint? The power cord is way too short! The only other minor complaint is that it would be useful to adjust the monitor’s volume level for fine-tuned calibration, especially in a surround system.

Overall, these are incredible studio monitors, especially considering the price. Focal has impressed me so much with these, and I now consider them in my top go-to list of studio monitor brands.

Great Monitors!

Great pair of near field monitors for the price. I deducted one star as the idle noise floor from the speakers is too high. Although as soon as you start playing anything it gets masked.
Also, due to the front bass ports, I have mine backed right up to a wall on isolated stands.

Highly recommended. Very flat & balanced sound right out of the box.

very happy with this purchase. these sound great Love the way low frequency translates on these high are super clear. and with the ability to adjust High and Low’s on the back of the speakers is great.

It’s Good. Nice Bass Response

All I can say is WOW! What a difference these 65’s do compared to my older speakers (which are not Focal). From the stereo translation to the flat response, these speakers are incredible! Excited to be part of the Focal Family.

I am using this boxes at home for misc listening amd i like them very.
Now i plan to buy the new SHAPE 65 or TWIN6B or to go to the HiFi speakers and take the ELECTRA 1008 BE.

I just bought my Alphas for a small project studio to record my albums and complete overdubs and mixing. So far, my Focal Alpha 65’s sound clear, articulate and are built to last many years. I don’t see myself needing to upgrade any time soon. Well done Focal!

AWESOME CLEARITY

Unfortunatelly at the moment i am having problems with one of my Alpha 65 monitors.
I bought them 3 months ago and i was preety happy with them but one of them is having problems. Seems like the monitor has lost the low frequencies and sounds distorted. When i went to turn it off the monitor was extremely hot in the back while the other one was at a normal temperature. They are both conected to power stabilizer so i don’t know what the problem could be.

I wish my dealer and the warranty will solve this problem because no harm was done to them.

Excellent product.
Its a perfect balance between volume, lows, highs, and sound image perfection.
The high quality of building makes it durable, with no vibrations with just the rubber feet.
My best investment in audio so far.

Well rounded sound with fantastic midrange clarity

Viel Bass. Etwas zuviel…? 125 Hz bereich könnte etwas gedämpfter sein. Klang detailhaft, und kräftig. Mein Musikstil ist Electronic Music und es passt… Vorteil von Bassreflex nach vorne: mann kann die Boxen rel. nahe in die Ecken montieren… Tolle Lautsprecher für ein Homesudio.

Amazing sound! Great transfer of sound from headphones to monitors. Low frequencies are clear and not muddy. Front bass ports make a small studio worthwhile.

This will be my first pro series focal audio equipment and let me tell you already its a huge upgrade compared to the KRKs in my previous setup. I do plan on saving for the next set after these. I’m also looking forward to setting these up in my new studio.

I love these entry level Focals. Entry level for Focal but beats out the rest of the competition by a huge margin in my opinion. I can only imagine what the S9s sound like since these Alpha’s are already this amazing.

I bought a pair of Alpha 65 monitors off Amazon and less than a year later one of the monitor voice coils seems to be damaged. I take excellent care of my equipment and am troubled that the quality does not hold here. I’d like to have the monitor fixed as it is under warranty. Can someone from Focal please respond to me? I will happily change this to a 5 star review if I am able to be helped, these monitors were great when they worked.

Very Pleased so far. Still working on breaking in period, but the sound is already a big difference from what I had prior to these Focal Alpha 65s.

I have been using them for a couple of days, and they are great.

«An amazing sounding monitor tainted by a badly designed standby feature»

I have been listening to music and mixing music with these monitors now for almost one month.

The only bad thing I can say about them is that the standby feature has to be the most poorly designed standby feature I have ever come across.
I hate it!

It works fine at louder volumes. But at lower volumes the monitors seem to have difficulty consistently detecting the signal that is sending music to them.
They can’t seem to tell the difference between a low music signal level and a no music signal.

So for me I have to boost the volume up for 5 secs or so every 25mins to stop them from switching to standby mode. The monitor to my right seems to be more likely to do this.
So the standby feature is not even the same between different monitors.

It also takes quite a crank of volume to unmute the monitors. And if one monitor switches to stanby mode while Im mixing, it’s a hard pan on the mixer to that monitor to get it back on again.

Well, I think I’ve said enough. You get the picture. Focal should really have done better here.

That said, I love everything else about these monitors. From a sound point of view. They are a joy to mix on. They are very accurate and give enough of the low end to allow me to lock in the kick and bass.
Ive never felt like I need a sub-woofer with these monitors. I can make eq moves with confidence everywhere from 40Hz to 20kHz and hear exactly what Im doing.
They just let you hear your music as it is within your production.

So for me, these are a high quality sounding monitor. And to be honest it’s not going to be easy to find something within this price range that would beat the Alphas.

If not for the Low Volume Standby problems I have described. I would have given these monitors 5 stars. If they had a switch to bypass auto standby mode I would have also given a 5 star review.
But as they don’t, I just have to live with it. For this reason I am taking 2 stars away.

A 3 star review it is.

Amazing speakers!

Hearing these speakers in the store pitted against other speakers of same size and specs, they sounded great and stood out. But getting them home and listening to your own mixes in your own environment was mind blowing.
The shear clarity of frequencies was eye opening and inspiring. These speakers actually give you energy to keep working as ear fatigue never seems to creep in as with other monitors when mixing for a longer period of time.
Worth every penny, thank you Focal for designing such a wonderful sounding monitor.

I bought them today, so they need some time to burn in, but I already like them very much. The sound is very crisp and dynamic, the low end is nice too. For that price a must! Cheers!

I’m so happy with this monitor. My experience of listening music has definitly improve. But… I had a little problem and I’m not satisfied with the official custom care center of Focal so far, is hard to contact as a user and client of the Focal company, the official contact from the site is only for people in France. I’m doubting my next purchase on studio headseat to be part of this family if there is no response.

Music presentation is perfect, but the build quality is terrible. After a 1 month the mine had to be sent for repair under warranty. 🙁 The repair was successful, but I’m not entirely happy. Could improve the quality of assembly!

Amazing!

I have only just broken in these monitors as I write this review, but these are the best set of monitors for a budding studio that you can buy for under a $1000. The imaging is very clean and defined for how small these monitors are. They are also constructed better than most other monitors at this price range. Great job Focal!

amazing sound!

Amazing product! Really opens the scope in terms of what I couldn’t hear in my mixes as well as in the spectrum of music. Have had quite the ear opener when listening to songs I’ve listened to all my life and hearing what regular speakers cannot articulate.

For the price, you get an amazing monitor, similar in sound quality to the PRO range, but friendlier on the price. I had the CMS65 for a while and they we’re absolutely fantastic, but I couldn’t keep them because of a personal financial setback sadly. Then I got a set of the Alpha65 and I was really impressed on overall performance in comparison to the CMS65. Of course there has to be a difference in quality but honestly if you’re not an audiophile or you don’t need the top of the line equipment these are some of the best monitors you can get for this range! Highly recommended!

Work on the low end.

One sounds great, the other distorts at F and F# across the spectrum of sound.

Easy to set up. like the +6db/ 0db sensitivity switch.

I completed the 20 hour recommended burn in process and am still within the 2 or so week period of usage, to allow the monitors to fill out in terms of sound reproduction. I have noticed some weird «plastic snapping/clicking» sounds that came from the plastic side cheeks, during the intial burn in period. I traced the source of this sound buy flattening my hand on the side cheeks and applying gentle pressure to reproduce the «snap/clicking» I heard. I’m not sure if this is normal, as the monitors settle into their new environment, or if something is actually «cracking underneath the hood». I will keep an eye/ear out for this issue, but wanted to register my product and mention this asap, so this can be remedied if it posses an issue in the near future/within the warranty period (which I read is 2 years). The best way to describe this sound, is almost similar to the plastic expanding or contracting due to temperature changes? Other than what was mentioned above, I love these studio monitors. The bass extension and definition is amazing and the stereo image is incredible. At first I thought they lacked a bit in the high end frequencies, but nope, everything is there, the sound is just so clean and open compared to my other references monitors. The Alpha 65s may be slightly attenuated in the high frequencies from what I’m use to, but this helps reduce ear fatigue. I also haven’t tried the +/- 3db high freq adjustment yet, so there is room to adjust if need may be, but for now, it was pretty easy to get use to the amazing sound quality.

Well worth it if you want a flat response product which displays the spectrum of sound you need to hear when referencing.

One speaker had a faulty tweeter on delivery and had to be returned immediately. Odd sound (whistle/rattle) at around 40 Hz on both speakers (F#0), ill fitting panels and trim. Not owned active monitors before so unable to comment on that. As a product…disappointing for the price.

Great Sound

I’m extremely satisfied with these monitors. I love them, and if lost or broken I’ll but new pair right away. And if I ever decide to upgrade, Focal products will be at the very top of my shortlist.

One of the best sounding speakers in this price range hands down

I would give 5 stars, but after four months one of the monitors low/mid speaker starts sounding like distorted at 80Hz.

PERFECT DETAILED AND AN AMAZING PRICE POINT

I’m missing the lower register for playback enjoyment; Alpha 65s are pretty good as near-field monitor speakers in their price-range, compared to the usual competition. I’m cringing at the overprice-tag for Focal’s CMS Sub (subwoofer). Looks like they don’t make one for the Alpha Line.

Alpha 65 is a Godsend monitor for Musicians…

This speakers sound amazingly good!!! I really love them, the only thing that botters me is a very soft him/whitenoise coming out of the tweeters when i’m not playing audio through them.

Переключатель чувствительности: Функция этого переключателя позволяет уровень сигнала с монитора при необходимости. Доступные значения чувствительности: 0 дБ. и +6дБ. Настройку +6 дБ следует использовать, если громкость вашего источника звука уже на самом высоком уровне, а общий сигнал слишком низкий.

Автоматический режим ожидания: Focal Alpha 65 Evo может перейти в Режим ожидания примерно через 15 минут отсутствия сигнала. Как только спикер обнаружит звуковой сигнал, он включится автоматически. 2-позиционный переключатель на задней панели монитора можно включить или отключить функцию автоматического перехода в режим ожидания.

Размещение: Рекомендуется расположить два динамики студийного монитора в равностороннем треугольнике. Три точки треугольник состоит из двух мониторов и вашей позиции прослушивания. Альфа 65 Evo также можно закрепить на стене с помощью двух резьбовых вставок на задней панели.
